Which Age Do You Belong...?
by Ekpedeme Ekpe
When we were growing up, everything seemed so conventional and so mechanized.
You had to brush your teeth and have your bath before breakfast,
You had to have siesta after school... you had to go through private lessons {if you could afford it}.
And of course a plate of rice or new dress for passing exams especially this part of the world (Africa).
This was all done to ensure that we give our best in school so as to get the best of everything...
Everything from results, to jobs, to good pay and good life and thus, success is attained.
It was done with the mindset that good life was dependent on good pay, which was dependent on good job, which was dependent on good results...good education, and so forth.
We were conditioned to believe that you couldn’t make it except you are well learned. You cannot make money while in school, you cannot be rich until age 40 and above, and that anything short of it is illegal.
But are we still in that age?
You can ask the workers how successful they are...
You can ask those up to 40 and above...
You can ask the graduates about their performance in school...
I’m sure you won’t be completely satisfied with their answers.
So what’s the way out of this? Since it does not lie in credentials, jobs, age, background, colour, etc.
It lies within you...yes, within you.
To some people it is gradually harnessed, to others it remains yet untapped.
Until this age, until NOW!
Where traditional education no longer holds water,
Where success is let out of the cage of traditional schooling and employment.
I’m not asking you to quit school or job, but to simply look beyond it. Look back at yourself and what lies within...
Stop counting on CREDENTIALS, go for POTENTIALS!
Stop seeking the CONFERRED, discover the ENDOWED!
Therein lies your success.
You don't need to be certified to be qualified,
but you need to be qualified to be certified.
James Bettie said, “Education does not teach you WHAT TO think, but HOW TO think”.
Stop looking for WHAT about your education and start looking for the HOW about your life with what you’ve got.
The problem we face in this part of the world is certificate syndrome...my son must go to school; my daughter must be a graduate.
But I want you to ponder on the WHAT and HOW of education
When James Bettie said “education does not teach you WHAT to think, but HOW to think” what did he really mean? ...
Can you figure out something?
I did...this is what I figured out.
#1.i realized first of all that so many people go through school and are still not educated. They pass exams, make good grades, they graduate; yet lack education.
So what about them you’d ask?
The thing about them is that, they trail the labour market, banking all their hope on WHAT their certificates will get them rather than HOW they can make a living with the education they got from school. You can see certificate syndrome.
#2.i realized that the moment you start looking for WHAT your certificate can get, you stop looking for HOW your education can help your dreams, your purpose, and your plans come true. The truth is, no employment can completely do this for you.
Are you thinking along?
I’m still not suggesting that you quit your school or job...at least not now.
But I’m simply asking you to look beyond...
You are worth more than that paper.
#3.i realized that certificate brings contentment, security, satisfaction, etc but kills initiatives, ideas, innovations, creativity, potentials and opportunities that greatly lie within.
Most people bury their heads in their jobs and never come out of it.
Do you agree with me?
So we can say that WHAT brings security, dependency and makes you stop thinking.
HOW on the other hand makes you look at the VERY MANY POSSIBILITIES that you can access with what you learnt in school.
I guess we are now clear on all these.
I can perceive you’ll ask what this fuss is all about?
Well...it is this fuss that has changed the age, the dispensation, the times that we are in.
Many people with or without schooling, with or without regular jobs are making the best out of life and I’m sure you know or have heard of some of them.
It is this that has enriched young people while still in school.
It is this that has made people successful at 20,22,25,30,any age, every age.
It is this that has changed the norm.
...So what?
Many people have not yet migrated to this age.
So at this point I should ask you again.
Which age are you in?...
Because it sure determines how you’ll fit in and how far you’d go in this age.
Times are not changing...times have changed!
Think, think, and think...
No matter where you belong now, we won’t stop until you get there...
We’ll continue to give intellectual resources and open you up to opportunities around that you can take advantage of for yourself and attain the level of success you want in life.
